Panerai was founded way back in 1860 as a Swiss watch shop in Florence, Italy. In the 1930s that they started to make watches, and at that time they were actually made by Rolex for Panerai and used to supply the Royal Italian Navy. It wasn't until 1993 that Panerai started selling watches to the general public. Things ramped up when they became part of the Richemont Group in 1997 and production moved to Switzerland. Since then they have made some really beautiful watches and their own in-house movements.
So what on earth is Carbotech you may ask. Well, it's a composite material based on carbon fibre, and was first used by Panerai on this Luminor Submersible (PAM00616) model. Paneria is pretty innovative when it comes to experimenting with high-tech materials from other industries and so no real surprise when they moved from ceramic to carbotech for their case construction. The formula of functional military performance coupled with pure Italian design makes this a real head-turner of a watch.
